Easter Sunday

            Blank...filled with nothing lodged in a dark cabinet where no one sees. No change comes upon the morsel because of rejection from a world who thought it was not good enough to use. Beaten, battered, and a bit torn at the edges...forgotten...until light enters the overwhelming darkness to a kind face who takes a hold of the broken pieces and with a little tender loving care starts to create something beautiful. My relationship with Jesus is an interesting one filled with its ups and downs like any other relationship except I know this one is special. For the nights I lie awake crying and praying for the answers I need or the times I just have to pray because I am so overjoyed I just want to share it with Jesus. I am a creation in progress.

            I have grown up in a Christian home and have always heard the stories about Jesus and know all the Bible stories by heart. I accepted Christ as my personal savior on Easter of 1999. It's one of those moments that you remember for the rest of your life. Yellow dress, hair done up all to go see the annual Easter play at our church. I was eight years old with so many ambitions. I always told my parents I  wanted to become an imaginear for Disney so I could draw all the pictures for the movies I love so much, but I have learned over the years I am not the only one working on an art project in my life. God takes the paint brush and each experience, good and bad, is another brush stroke on the canvas of my life making and shaping my personality, character, and service to God in the way He wants. And even though we may see some of these strokes as a mistake after awhile we learn that they add depth to the person we are.

            God has challenged me in many different ways with family, friends, and school and these different situations have made me the person I am today. When I paint I always try to come up with the best idea for a painting even if it does not make a lot of sense to the people around me, because it usually does not. God does the same thing, by knowing the plans He has for me (Jer. 29:11) He already knows how I will be at the end and every struggle and smile that will go along with making me the person He wants me to be.

            It is a colorful world we live in and color makes all the difference. We see the good in people, we see the bad in people, and we see both in ourselves. We spend so much of our life trying to place everything in a black or white category we forget to look at the color around us. The work that God does in my life and in others life brings out the true colors we seem to dismiss. God always knows when to provide for me and to place the right people in my life at the exact right time in order to teach me lessons and help me along the way.

            The brushes, paint, and color placed on the canvas create a beautiful array of attributes pleasing to the eye, but also pleasing to the heart. As a creation of God I want to be able to be seen as beautiful through Jesus, but also be able to tell people about the love I have been given and the love they can receive. Barbie the World's Icon?

                                                        

            Has anyone ever had a day where they have come home from school and said, “I wish I was skinnier?” The ideal image, what we strive for everyday with exercise healthy eating...not eating at all. Our society has been influenced by tv, media, and yes even toys that tell us how to dress look and act on a daily basis. The shocker is children, teenagers, and adults are being badly influenced by the image of a specific toy...Barbie. Barbie's super skinny image gives girls and boys an unrealistic and unattainable body image that causes them to not be happy with who they are and hinders their success as a person. Today I am going to talk to you about the ways barbies effect us, how they effect young children, and people who have gone after the dream of becoming barbie and ken and how to be happy with yourself.

            According to studies done by several eating disorder clinics 36 million people are effected by eating disorders. The way we look at ourselves on a daily basis effects how we feel for the day. Many of us ask ourselves how will people feel about me today? Everywhere we look there is a picture of a gorgeous model who is “perfect in every way”. From the time we were little we have played with the amazing Barbie who has had almost every career imaginable along with running for President five times. We want to be her, gorgeous, rich, perfect. Children are seeing images of the so called “perfect” body and as young as age five asking their mothers if they are fat according to a Sussex University study. Helga Dittmar from SU said, “These ultra thin images not only lowered young girls body esteem, but also decreased their satisfaction with their actual body size, making them desire a thinner body.” We want to improve ourselves, which is fine until we get to the point of no return the point of really looking like Barbie.

            This brings me to my second point of people who have gone to the point of really becoming Barbie through plastic surgery. According to an article called, “One Woman's Quest to become Barbie” A woman named Cindy Jackson has had 20 plastic surgeries and spent around $100,000. The real kicker is she has a man who has decided to become her Ken, Tim Whitfield-Lynn. Jackson has held the the World Record foor the most plastic surgeries for the past ten years. She now owns her own business  where she gives people the help they need to look like Barbie too.

            Bill Cosby once said, “I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” My final point is how can we be happy with ourselves? We have to realize that we will never look like the perfect Barbie. If Barbie were a real human she would be 6 feet tall weigh 101 lbs and have dimensions of 35”, 18”, 34”, which are quite unrealistic. As a teenager we need to stand up and say it is ok to look different, to be the one who is not perfect, to really make a difference.

            We have talked about the ways Barbies effect us, people who have done it, and now, today. I am challenging you to overcome the status quo and to live life to the fullest. You are beautiful and there isn't another person on this Earth like you. You have so much potential, now go to the world and say Carpe Diem, I will live life to the fullest and seize the day.

1. Don’t try to read other people’s minds

Just because you think you know other people may be thinking, you probably do not. We make life so complicated when we try to figure out what that girl thinks of me, am I too fat, or do I have enough muscle. Take the time to just be content in yourself and do what you enjoy doing. Today is palm Sunday. If you have not already gone to church, take some time to take the kids or your friends along, go to lunch and just be blessed today. Think about all the blessings in your life this week. Mine are my wonderful boyfriend, my beautiful roommates, and the opportunity to have a higher education in college. Speaking of college that is why I am writing this blog in order to get a grade. Sadly, or not sadly, I have become addicted and am going to try to do this once a day for anyone who wants to read it all summer.

Here is another thing to think about since I am talking about being in college

Which two are you going to pick. Well personally I chose Social Life and Good Grades because I know that those two are very important, but I have figured out how to beat the system. I always choose Good Grades and then some weeks I choose social life like staying up with my room mates giggling about boys, movies, and funny stories. Other weeks I choose sleep, which means I take a weekend off and sleep until I can no longer stay in bed. I quite enjoy both things and in order not to die I really like the weeks where I sleep.

My last thought before I go to sing in the school choir. Enjoy this week of Easter and the resurrection of Jesus because He came to save the world. Also as it comes closer and you wonder why we have bunnies and eggs look up old gods and the fertility goddess from Greece and Rome and maybe that will answer some questions for you. Lie to Me

Lie to Me is a fabulous show, but I have come across an article that tells one how to tell if someone is lying to you. However, here is the disclaimer from the article:

"Warning: sometimes ignorance is bliss; after gaining this knowledge, you may be hurt when it is obvious that someone is lying to you. The following deception detection techniques are often used by police, forensic psychologists, security experts and other investigators."

If you click above you are more than welcome to read the article for yourself, but here I will give you a brief description of what was said and how you can use it to see if someone is lying to you.

There are several ways to tell if someone is lying to you:

• Body Language
• Emotional Gestures
• Contradictions
• Interactions And Reactions
• Verbal Context and Content

Body Language can be very obvious when trying to detect lies. For example people who are lying to you will tend to use less hand gestures and the ones that are used will be towards themselves. They will also tend to touch their faces and try quite hard not to make eye contact.

With Emotional Gestures emotions do not use all the muscles in the face and the timing of the emotion is behind do to the fact that they have to think about it. A great example they use in the text is when someone says "I love you" you expect a smile, but when they frown you might want to evaluate why they are saying something that they do not mean.

Contradictions go hand-in-hand with emotional gestures. When one is saying something that they should be happy about, yet are frowning, you may want to address the issue.

With Interactions and Reactions people may subconsciously place items (such as books, coffee, et al) between themselves and you in order to feel more comfortable by the barrier. Another common thing is to turn one's head or body away from the accuser in order to "hide", they may also be defensive against your questions.

Verbal Context and Content is very important when deciding if someone is lying or not. The most interesting way to decipher whether someone is lying or not is how they answer if they did something or not. The article said that when someone uses a contraction they are more likely to be telling the truth. Unless of course they have read the article or something similar. :) Words may also be spoken softly and to many details will be added because they are uncomfortable with silence in the conversation.

Now you have all the facts you need to find out if someone is lying to you. Keep doing research and always look beyond what you can see.
